FAQs
How do I calculate what size windlass I need for my boat?
To find the correct windlass size, add the total weight of your anchor and your chain together, then multiply that number by 4. This final calculated number must be less than the maximum pull capacity of the windlass you select for safe cruising. If your total is at or above the maximum pull, you should upgrade to the next largest windlass model. (Note: Rope weight is extremely light and generally does not affect lifting performance).
Can I leave my boat anchored using just the windlass to hold the load?
No. A windlass is strictly a retrieval device designed to lift the anchor, not a high load-bearing device. When your boat is at anchor, you must always secure your anchor rode to a cleat or another dedicated mooring point on the bow to prevent severe damage to the windlass.
Why is my anchor rode jamming when being retrieved by the windlass?
The windlass itself does not physically stow the anchor rode; it relies purely on gravity to drop the rode into the anchor locker. If there is not a free and clear area directly under the hawse pipe for the incoming rode to fall into, the line will back up and jam the windlass system.
What size boat is the Lewmar H2G windlass designed for?
The Lewmar H2G horizontal windlass is designed to handle anchoring for boats up to 48 feet in length.
What size chain and line does the Lewmar H2G use?
This specific H2G gypsy model is configured to fit 8mm or 5/16-inch G4 chain, and 9/16-inch to 5/8-inch anchor line.
What is the maximum pulling power of the Lewmar H2G 12V windlass?
Driven by a 700W motor, the Lewmar H2G delivers a maximum pulling power of 1,433 lbs.
Is the Lewmar H2G a vertical or horizontal windlass?
The Lewmar H2G is part of the stylish H-Series, which are horizontal windlasses.
