Installation Notes If Replacing Dometic ECD16k - 115V

The Webasto FCF 16000 is a good replacement option for the Dometic ECD 16k, but there are some differences that should be noted when installing the Webasto:

  • The Webasto FCF uses 4 and 5 inch ducting whereas the Dometic uses 5 and 6 inch. An easy replacement as the flex ducting can be cinched down in size easily.
  • Condenser sizes are different. A boat having Dometic on it would be using 5/8” water lines. When replacing with a Webasto FCF unit, a provided 5/8” to 3/4” adapter (included with the unit) is required with a short length of 3/4” water hose to connect to the larger, superior Webasto condenser. Also an easy task, but needs mentioning.
  • The controller is not interchangeable meaning the cable and controller must be replaced. Both the cable and controller are included with every FCF unit.

There are very slight differences in the dimensions to take into account when considering installation location, but this is rarely a problem.

Webasto FCF 16k Marine AC WORKS 4 ME!
By
I have been using it here in Houston for over a year now. It runs nearly every day. Needless to say HOUSTON IS HOT! The FCF is able to keep the front 25’ of my 37’ center cockpit cool and dry. That said, let’s be reasonable. With extreme heat, there are conservative rewards. At the height of last Summer (July-August), mid-day the temperature never got below 84. But then my Bimini and dodger came back from repairs and I was able to drop it to 81. Then I added two of those sail shades, initially just covering the Bimini and boom with a second layer (temp got down to 78)), then I added the triangular one to the bow section, back to the mast, with the corners overlapping the stern sail shade. That got me down to 74!!! Some of you may read that and think 74 SUCKS! Let me look elsewhere, but I remind you, I’m in HOUSTON and I imagine anywhere on the Redneck Riviera, 74 is BLISSFUL and a reminder - That’s at the height of Summer inside a half-inch of fiberglass shell (if I’m lucky) AND I’m also giving you the worst case scenario. Two weeks ago when it had rained and knocked the temperature down into the low 80’s, I forgot I had set the thermostat for 65 (knowing it would never get that cold - IT GOT ME THERE 🥶 Of course, all of this is contingent on keeping the marine system clean and I’ve noticed the cleaner the system is running the cooler it will get. The last thing I would mention is IF you have a larger boat, make sure your outlet is multi-ported. I have only got a single outlet, so that while my galley and salon are well cooled, the bow head and v-berth are starved for cooling.. because this is a 37’ and as I pointed out, the cooling I get is only for the forward berth, I do have a separate 8,000BTU AC unit in my stern berth. The engine room isolated both cabins so there isn’t much room for crossover. That stern berth is only big enough for a bed, a “nightstand cabine” on one side and down the other a very female sized stern head. I only mention this to say that secondary AC unit isn’t cooling a lot of air and there really isn’t any space back there for anything else, so short of traveling on a long passage, that vberth up front is my primary storage area. Because of that, I’m not concerned with cooling it, so I will typically pull the door shut, separating the head from the salon. At this point, I can get the full cabin (now just salon and galley) down to 72 (approximately 800-900 cubic ft) if my math is correct (10w x 15L x 6’ H): Feel free to correct me. I did the bare minimum to graduate where math requirements were concerned. Anyway, two thumbs up Webasto. It’s a tough job down here in Houston! You guys are handling the pressure like rockstars!

I've just installed the unit, so far so good, I'm impressed how much power has this a/c. The salon of My 36' mainship is freezing (70°f) even though is 92°f outside
