Marine Wind Instruments

A marine wind meter measures wind speed and sometimes wind direction. On boats, it’s used to monitor current wind conditions for sailing, navigation, or weather tracking.

Ultrasonic pulses are high-frequency sound waves typically above the range of human hearing (over 20 kHz), used to measure distance, speed, or movement without physical contact. An ultrasonic marine wind meter sends out ultrasonic pulses through the air. The pulses travel from one transducer to another. Wind moving through the air changes the travel time of the pulses. By detecting the tiny changes in pulse timing, the meter calculates wind speed and wind direction. The advantages to ultrasonic wind meters on boats are 1) No moving parts, so less wear and tear, 2) Very precise and fast measurements 3) Work in harsh marine environments without mechanical fouling.

A marine wind transducer measures wind speed and direction using a mechanical sensor (vane and cups) or ultrasonic technology, converting the wind data into an electronic signal compatible with your marine instruments, chartplotters, or autopilot systems.

In essence, a wind transducer is the sensor that converts wind into an electrical signal, then the wind transmitter sends that information to your onboard devices. However, the terms are often used interchangeably, and many times transducers bring transmitters and vice versa.
